Some Social Game Design Principles Before Launch

A great article, like most on Gamasutra, about designing games for social networks.

But my fascination starts when the author explains why we can’t rely on test driven design: 

It’s not like you can learn to design games at the expense of the player’s experience

Spot on.

Do as many tests as you need or think are effective but never, never ever, believe that users can tell you what they want. If that was possible all design would be as simple as asking the user.

Five years ago no one thought millions of people would spend their time doing virtual farming on a social networking site.
